Innovation Commons | Nebraska Innovation Campus (NIC)

In 2010, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln acquired the former Nebraska State Fairgrounds to establish Nebraska Innovation Campus (NIC), a premier public-private research and technology hub designed to foster collaboration between the university, private industry, and the community. The first phase of development set the tone for the campus, transforming the historic site into a forward-looking environment for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Innovation Commons serves as the central hub and front door of Nebraska Innovation Campus. The building complex brings together the NIC Conference Center, Nebraska Innovation Studio, office and research space, and planned retail and dining, creating a vibrant destination that supports collaboration, learning, and public engagement throughout the campus.

The project combines the adaptive reuse of the historic 1931 4-H Building with a new, connected office and research building, together providing more than 130,000 square feet of flexible space for research, incubator businesses, conferences, and tenant offices. The renovation preserves the original high-bay trusses as a defining architectural feature within the 400-seat conference center, while the new three-story companion building delivers contemporary research and office environments. An open plaza between the two buildings anchors the campus, hosting outdoor events, gatherings, and overflow conference activities.
