Nebraska Military Department

Joint Force Headquarters

The Nebraska Military Department completed a 140,000-square-foot office building to serve as the strategic headquarters for the Nebraska Army and Air National Guard units, along with a state-of-the-art Emergency Operations Command Center for Nebraska Emergency Management. The facility was designed to support critical command, coordination, and response functions while providing a secure and efficient working environment for military and civilian staff.

Sinclair Hille Architects served as the lead design firm for the $24 million project, which has received strong recognition from Nebraska’s political and military leadership. The high-performance building was designed to achieve LEED Silver certification under the New Construction category and incorporates innovative daylighting strategies that enhance workplace comfort while supporting energy efficiency and long-term operational performance.

Organized around a large multi-story assembly atrium, the building places office spaces along the north and south sides to maximize access to natural light. A combination of interior light shelves, clerestory windows, and exterior solar-shade metal awnings delivers both direct and indirect daylight throughout the facility. Durable materials such as precast and cast-in-place concrete, exterior metal panels, and interior wood acoustical systems were selected for longevity, while integrated security measures—including landscaped berms, retaining walls, and controlled site access—ensure safety without compromising the campus setting.
