Recreation & Wellness Center-East Campus

Sinclair Hille Architects, in association with HOK Architects, were selected for the renovation and addition of the East Campus Recreation & Wellness Center. Constructed in 1926, it was originally designed to provide space on the agricultural-based campus for physical education instruction and a campus gymnasium.

The renovation and addition project had five major components:

  • Renovate and reconfigure programmatic spaces contained in the existing building shell.
  • Create a highly visible south addition comprised of open fitness space and large exercise studio.
  • Erect a new gymnasium to the west of the existing building, elevated from grade, to allow for covered parking beneath the addition.
  • Expand administrative function to the east with a one-story addition that provides for a possible exercise terrace above.
  • Connect the existing building and new additions together conceptually with the inclusion of a mezzanine level running track.

Alterations to the interior included new programming of the first level and re-purposing the existing gymnasium as a multi activity court (MAC). The new program contained within the first level of the existing building to include new men’s and women’s locker rooms, family changing room, physical assessment and injury prevention, a meeting room, demonstration kitchen, golf simulator, and mechanical and storage space.

The south addition includes a multi-level fitness space and a large group exercise room. The east addition contains the recreation administrative suite, with an additional basketball court located on the second level.
