Schmid Law Library Expansion

Located within McCollum Hall on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln East Campus, the Schmid Law Library renovation and expansion addressed growing space and programmatic needs within the College of Law. The project involved the selective renovation of approximately 45,000 gross square feet along with a 19,000-square-foot addition to the existing facility. Sinclair Hille Architects worked in partnership with Alley Poyner Architects to improve the library’s functionality while supporting the university’s evolving higher education learning environments.

The primary addition on the east side of the building addressed a severe shortage of space for library stacks, student reading areas, group study rooms, and computer and multimedia training facilities. The design expanded the building while maintaining compatibility with the existing structure through the use of brick veneer and precast concrete accents that match the original exterior materials.

Interior improvements reorganized the library to better support both individual study and collaborative learning. The expanded facility includes additional library stacks, student reading and study areas, training spaces, and improved support areas for library services. The project also incorporated the relocation of faculty offices and Career Services to improve access and operational efficiency within the law school.

A smaller secondary addition to the north resolved accessibility challenges and improved building security while providing space for the relocated Career Services office. Together, the renovation and additions modernized the Schmid Law Library and strengthened its role as a central academic resource supporting the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s college and university campus facilities.
