The Eagle Parking Garage on the northwest corner of 14th and M Streets in Lincoln, Nebraska, had been a local landmark for decades. However, years of neglect and declining local tenants saw the structure fall into decay and disrepair. Constructed originally as a private parking facility, it was purchased by the City of Lincoln in 2018 to address the need for additional public parking in the downtown core.
Through a competitive public process, Sinclair Hille’s team led by Kimley Horn parking consultants was selected for the extensive $5.2 million repair and renovation work required. Sinclair Hille Architects was tasked with implementing code and technology-related upgrades on all 5 parking levels including the elevator equipment & exit stair elements. In addition, they were asked to update the tenant spaces at street level and replace the aging façade with something new and more transparent.
Following completion of the renovation, the garage has now been carefully mended and given many years of additional service. The exterior has been repaired and given an entirely new visual identity. Fiber cement panels were chosen for their light weight, durability, and good resistance to staining from fumes, chemicals, and the elements. Multiple shades of neutral grey have been subtly blended along with an intriguing pattern of slot perforations to create texture and transparency in the daylight. Lighting was added to illuminate brightly colored structural elements to achieve the city’s desire for a bit of nighttime excitement along 14th street, which is an edge boundary of Lincoln’s busy music and entertainment district.
