Behlen Laboratory

Behlen Laboratory, originally constructed in 1965 to support the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has long played an important role in research at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Designed with both below- and above-grade spaces, the facility included a specialized sub-basement to accommodate advanced research, reflecting the University’s early commitment to scientific innovation. Over time, the building has evolved to meet changing research priorities, with select functions continuing to support specialized work.

In 2012, the University of Nebraska announced a long-term partnership with the United States Strategic Command to establish a University-Affiliated Research Center (UARC). This university-wide initiative draws on expertise from all four University of Nebraska campuses, enabling faculty to engage in solutions-oriented research aligned with federal funding opportunities. The UARC supports research efforts focused on anticipating and addressing USSTRATCOM’s evolving needs, reinforcing the university’s role as a trusted research partner.

Renovations to Behlen Laboratory were completed to support secure, flexible, and multidisciplinary research environments. The updated facility provides high-quality laboratories and offices with enhanced utility infrastructure designed to accommodate export-controlled research and varying security requirements. Program-specific spaces across multiple levels support a range of scientific and collaborative uses, ensuring the building remains a versatile and future-ready asset for advanced research and innovation.
