UNL Devaney Volleyball Complex

The Devaney Sports Center transformation reimagines a historic multi-sport facility into a modern, athlete-focused venue designed for the next era of Nebraska athletics. Originally constructed in 1976, the complex has long served as a cornerstone for competition and training, housing a 13,500-seat arena, natatorium, indoor track, and a wide range of support spaces. Sinclair Hille Architects, in association with 360 Architecture, led a comprehensive renovation that builds on this legacy while elevating performance, experience, and flexibility.

The project was made possible by a broader campus shift, as the University of Nebraska partnered with the City of Lincoln to relocate basketball programs to the new Haymarket arena and move wrestling and strength training to the Hendricks Training Complex. These changes freed up critical space within Devaney, allowing the existing facility to be reconfigured and enhanced to better serve athletes, coaches, and fans.

At the core of the renovation was the transformation of the arena into a more intimate 6,000–9,000 seat venue with premium courtside and VIP seating. The design also introduced upgraded concessions, new video and scoring systems, and a fully reimagined arena level with modern locker rooms, coaches’ offices, hospitality areas, and dedicated visiting team facilities. A new entry sequence enhances the recruiting experience, while comprehensive mechanical and electrical upgrades ensure long-term performance and efficiency.

Completed in May 2014, the Devaney Sports Center Improvements project positions the facility as a state-of-the-art home for Nebraska athletics—supporting continued success in the Big Ten while delivering an enhanced experience for every user.
