Southwood Lutheran Church

Nestled on 30 acres of rolling hills, Southwood Lutheran Church welcomes people to a rapidly developing area of south Lincoln. The facility was the culmination of a ten-year effort of analysis, master planning and design.

The design of the church empowers the congregation to fulfill their mission of worship, service, and education. From the way the building’s site orientation, capturing views of the majestic sanctuary, to the circular entry courtyard, the building is both striking and inviting.

Once inside, worshipers are greeted by a rich color palette of earth tones, stone, and cherry wood that are highlighted by natural light. The sanctuary is focused on the altar and the sophisticated detailing of the large cross. Natural light from clerestory windows enhance the natural materials of stone and wood.

The large education program dictated the need for flexible spaces that grouped children by age and allowed for future growth. Accessed by a grand stair flanked by large windows, the education area meets both the current demand of the program and future growth. Classrooms for smaller children are clustered around larger group spaces that allow varying class sizes to gather for activities. The youth program space for teenage students features a large fellowship area, smaller study rooms, and a snack bar area. Adult study groups enjoy comfortable rooms with couches and large windows affording views of the rolling hills to the south and east.

Space for fellowship includes a café and large fellowship hall served by a commercial grade kitchen. High top tables, lounge chairs, and couches overlook a view of the landscape and provide worshipers a relaxing social area.

I enjoyed working with SHA on the Canopy Street Project.  It was a very complex project which required both large scale design thought as well as a focus on small details. Their professionalism impressed me as well as all of the other clients in the project from restaurants, to hotel operations through condo buyers, SHA continued to move the project forward and solve problems with all in mind.  As a licensed architect myself I really appreciated their willingness to partner with me and listen to my design ideas while improving the direction time and time again. Quite simply, Canopy Street would not have been nearly as successful without SHA’s talented staff.
